Ambienté – Commercial Architecture & Shopping Mall Design

Commercial Architecture | Retail Planning | Structural Grid Planning | Interior Planning


Ambiente is a conceptual commercial architecture and shopping mall design project in Delhi, NCR, developed around the principles of efficient commercial planning, maximisation of built-up and saleable areas, intuitive circulation and an architecturally expressive structural system.

The project explores how commercial architecture can balance planning efficiency with a strong architectural identity—creating a building that maximises its usable internal areas while using its structural grid, façade geometry and vertical circulation as integral elements of the design.

With a 30,000 sqm (7.5 acre) site, the development was planned as a multi-level commercial destination combining retail, food and beverage, entertainment, cinema, restaurants, exhibition spaces, wellness and office functions.


Commercial Architecture Designed Around Efficiency

In commercial buildings, every square metre has a direct relationship with development potential, tenant efficiency and commercial viability.

The planning strategy for Ambienté therefore focused on optimising the relationship between built-up area, saleable/lettable area, circulation and service infrastructure.

Rather than treating circulation as leftover space, the project uses it as an active component of the retail experience. The central atrium and interconnected circulation network create clear movement paths while simultaneously providing visual connections between multiple retail levels.


The result is a commercial plan where customer circulation, retail frontage, vertical movement and common areas work together, allowing the building to accommodate a diverse tenant mix without compromising the overall visitor experience.

The ground and first floors are primarily organised around retail, anchor stores and shops, while upper levels introduce food, entertainment, restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinema, wellness and commercial offices.

Maximising BUA Through Intelligent Grid Planning

One of the key architectural challenges in the project was to maximise the efficiency of the building envelope without creating a repetitive or monotonous commercial façade.

The building was therefore developed using a combination of straight and radial structural grids.

The primary straight grids establish a rational structural framework for the retail floor plates, while multiple radial grids allow the building to respond to its curved geometry and create more dynamic internal and external spaces.

The structural planning incorporates radial grids at regular angular intervals, together with curved grid systems of different radii. The drawings also use offset grids to accommodate slanted columns at different levels, allowing the structure to respond to the stepped architectural form.

This approach demonstrates our understanding of radial structural planning in complex commercial architecture, where structural efficiency and architectural expression need to be resolved together from the earliest stages of planning.

Building Stepping & Inclined Structural Elements

Rather than developing a conventional vertical box, the building steps outward and inward across different levels.

This creates opportunities to:

  • Improve the efficiency of individual floor plates

  • Generate additional usable internal areas

  • Create differentiated retail and commercial zones

  • Improve visual connectivity between floors

  • Introduce depth and variation into the façade

  • Integrate inclined structural columns with the architectural language

The inclined columns are not treated simply as structural necessities. They become part of the façade composition, allowing the structural system itself to contribute to the identity of the building.

This integration of structure and architecture is particularly important in large commercial developments, where repetitive floor plates can otherwise result in visually monotonous

façades.

Radial Grid Planning as an Architectural Strategy

A defining feature of the project is the use of multiple radial grids combined with conventional orthogonal grids.

The radial systems allow the building to accommodate curved edges, atrium geometry and non-linear architectural elements, while the straight grids maintain efficiency for the planning of shops, services and structural bays.

The project uses radial grids at 8° intervals along with multiple curved grid radii, combined with straight 8 × 11 m and 8 × 12 m grid systems.

This hybrid approach allows complex geometry to remain structurally rational and commercially usable.

For us, radial planning is not simply a way of producing an interesting form. It is a method of coordinating structure, circulation, façade geometry, retail planning and usable floor area within a single architectural system.


Commercial Interior Planning

The interior planning follows the same principle of balancing experience with efficiency.

The large central atrium establishes a strong visual anchor and provides orientation across multiple levels. Retail units are organised around the circulation network, creating opportunities for visibility and frontage while maintaining clear customer movement.

Different levels are programmed according to their commercial and experiential potential:

Ground & First Floors — Retail : Anchor stores, individual retail units, kiosks and high-volume circulation.

Second Floor — Food & Social Spaces : Food court, food stalls, kitchens, retail and supporting circulation. The proposed food court occupies approximately 1,950 sqm including food stalls, kitchens, service corridors and circulation.

Third Floor — Entertainment & Culture : Cinema, restaurants, arcade, exhibition/gallery and retail spaces.

Fourth Floor — Wellness & Commercial : Gym, spa and salon, offices, conference facilities and associated support spaces.

This vertical zoning allows different commercial functions to coexist while creating a destination that remains active throughout the day.

Circulation as a Commercial Tool

Effective circulation planning is critical to the success of a shopping mall.

The project therefore considers circulation not merely as a code requirement but as a commercial design opportunity.


The central atrium provides visual orientation, while the arrangement of vertical circulation and interconnected floor plates encourages visitors to move through different retail zones.

At the same time, dedicated service corridors, service cores and loading infrastructure allow back-of-house movement to remain separated from customer circulation. The plans specifically incorporate service cores and service corridors across the commercial floors.

This separation helps create cleaner customer environments while allowing retail operations, deliveries and maintenance to function efficiently.


Architecture Where Structure Drives the Design

Ambiente demonstrates our approach to commercial architecture as an integrated discipline.

The structural grid is developed alongside the floor-plan strategy. The floor plates inform the façade. The façade responds to the structural stepping. Circulation is integrated with the atrium. And the resulting geometry creates a distinct architectural identity.

This approach is particularly valuable for large-format commercial projects, where seemingly small planning decisions can have a significant impact on usable area, circulation efficiency, construction complexity and commercial value.
